On top of narrow roads, weak infratructure, we have an attitude of 'who cares' on the roads in Bangalore. While I understand that there is a shortage of manpower on rods..here are some suggestions which could be debated for execution : a. Accelerated education of 'road rules' with warning of 'fines' - this to run for 3 months. b. Painting of all interestions in Bangalore with lane and stop disciplines. ( there was a time when we did not cross the stop line, lest we have to pay the fine of Rs.50/= ) c.3 months of campaign fine for collections across Bangalore. This will send a message that vilations of rules will not be tolerated. This can be done by a team of police and volunteers.. d. Some people will choose to continue to pay fine and ignore the law...impound their licenses to drive.. e. Like RoC regulations, make CEO's of companies who hire vehicles to ferry their empoloyees to make a statement every quarter that every vehicle used by thier company followed all traffic rules - right now they penalise the vehicles arriving late into the offices and the vehicle break all rules on the road to reach on time...this is seen every morning in brookfield where I reside and drive to office to EPIP area.. I feel this can make some impact on the office veicles not breaking rules. f.Educate people that no insurance - vehicle / life / medical will be entertained if they are injured or loose life in a road accident when they were violating the rule on the road... So on and so forth...I am sure none of the above ideas are new and I am sure everyone concerned to execute must be working on some or many of the above. As we say, these are my 2 cents..:o) Anand Chaturvedi

There is something else also badly needed. We need some tough cops on the roads, who mean business. We see all those heavy vehicles like buses, trucks, lorries, etc, plying on the roads using all the lanes, with impunity. They virtually block the entire road, and make it unusable for other users. If our cops can be tough and penalize the heavy vehicles, which don't drive only in the left lane, I am sure it will be a detterent for the drivers. I have written this suggestion to the Traffic Police also, however haven't seen any change so far. Manoj Jhanji

While we are spending lot of money on the new projects we also need to make sure that the existing resources are used to their capacity. Today I think Bangalore has way too many vehicles then the roads can handle and one way to handle it is by doing a sort of time division multiplexing. So, probably have all the goods vehicle, be it a handcart carrying vegitable or a big truck ,all should be put on hold between 8AM - 10 AM and 5 PM and 7PM. This would give a quicker passage for all the office goers and they would reach early , as a result the roads would get emptiers and the goods vehicles will have enough space to mover around making their transits fater too. Also, the signals, junctions, crossing and turns need to be looked at carfully, today the trasit through these is slower because either the roads have pot holes, no Zebra crossing resulting in people crossing roads at random or there is a bus stop right after or before junction. We need to make sure that the road at and about 200 Meters around such junctions/crossings is absolutly smooth and is a No-Stoping Zone any type of Vehicles including B.M.T.C. busses. Typical examples of what I am talking about are some of the crossings at bannerghatta road like Arekere and Sony world junction.

We first need a fitter traffic police. Local truck/auto stand people are able to bully traffic police and drive against the traffic on one ways. To witness such a disaster, just stand at Marathahalli junction.

Absolutely agree to this. Rules must be strictly followed and non compliers should be penalised. No compromise and no bribery. Let the policeman who brings the maximum amount of fines be rewarded monetarily. This will encorage the policeman to record these incidences.

I don't know if anybody who has power to make changes, is reading these posts. Otherwise, it will be waste of time discussing here. Anyway, I want to share my experience here. Daily I commute via Banashankari bus stand. That place is a complete mess. Lot of roads, come and meet from different directions and meet at different points. Because of this, there are lot of automated signals. And there is a major bus terminus in the midst of this. And, nobody is inclined to follow rules and there are more people walking on the road than the vehicles. People don't wait for the bus to arrive at the bus stand. They get down and get in when the bus is waiting at the signal. Drivers allow people of get down and get in places other than the stand! And these buses, don't care for the signals. They stop in the middle of the road and blocking all the traffic. And start and turn in whichever direction they want and go even when the signal is RED!! There are many police personnel, who are mute spectators! This place is a complete mess. The only way to get it into shape is to make the police more active, implement stringent rules and put fine on anybody (including BMTC drivers) who violate rules. Also, a rethinking on the place of bus terminus and automated signals is needed here.

I share the frustration of many in this forum. The traffic problem resolution is as good as the governance and the implementation of the rules and regulations that is woefully inadequate. I have come to believe that the sense of entitlement is what is ailing us and that is the root cuae of the problem. In odrer to break the cycle, here is what I suggest can be done in the traffic discipline or indiscipline. Bangalore City Traffic Polic and the RTO getogether under the Abide agenda procurring/developing traffic simulators in their various regions. This can be privatised. Any license renewal, or new license seekers, new/renewal vehicle registration across the various vehicle platforms, Aurtorickshaw, cars, motocyles and even trucks and tractors should gotherough the mandatory SImulation tester. The simulation must be graded with various scenarios, and complex situation rolled in. Those with a passing mark of B or 80% be allowed to ply on the roads after passing vehicle inspection. THe simulator test will also bring down the corruption in the RTO as this would allow us to record the data under RTI. The license renewal should be limited to 4 years at a stretch on their Birthdays, unlike 20 yr schemes that we have today. In 20 yrs vehiclular design, road/traffic conditions change and thus making it mandotary "simulation" testing of drivers/pilots is effectinve way of keeping skillsets current. All Driving school trainers/touts should have a certification from these simulation test agencies. I believe over the next 5 yrears we would have a made an impact. Sooner the process better it is for everyone. The biggest bang for RTO/BSTP/Governemtn of Karnataka is to fix a fee and take a cut from it (through privatized channel partners). THe novelty value will bring in everyone and get tested. The inane idea to best the system will bring in repeat offenders (fails) into the system. The license hence issued should carry the names and the (digital)signatureRTO offecire, the area Superitendent of the Traffic Police so that they can be held accountable if there is a violatio in their field of influence/responsibility. I can help design the course, process with traffic experts. please reach out for me at Saragur.srihari@gmail.com or at +91 99 723 99405 if yuo think there is any merit in this idea. Jai Ho Srihari

Hi , I am surprised and overwhelmed by the idea and suggestion you have given to the traffic woes we have in our city. I am sure by doing/implementing your idea along with govts Metro, public Transport we can acheive much better traffic movement and friendly driving in today's roads. Feel , there is one point which we might add to your idea. The traffic rules under transportation act was last reviewed and may be amended in the year 1988 and it tells us we have come across a long way and time. With the time, the area around us has changes and so as the behaviours of road users, not only they have become more frustrated and arrogant and mercy less and have lost social responsibility or you can say civic sense. What we need And I sincerly request to ABIDE group that, there is a high time we should amend our traffic rules and by that make it absolutely mandatory to follow them and what best is it be made mandatory for bunch of bad Monkeys/Dogs is to give them rewards and capital punishments(since we are civilised Monkeys'). Off course I am not talking about new idea's here , they have been in existance just not given importance, just barrow it from other similar countries which follow them. Vijay

Four lane 4 km flyover on NH4 near Peenya Dasarahally is progressing well and could be operational by mid of this year. There are three most important things that need to be done immediately. 1. Pedestrian sub ways near BMTC bus stops along the stretch near Peenya, Jalahally circle, Dasarahally, and 8th Mile (hesarghatta cross). Same mistake is done near Hosur road. However near Makali and Madanayakanahally, people got the ped sub ways done by doing strike. 2. Staggered underpass for vehicles along NH4 near Goragontepalya for the smooth movement of ring road vehicles. If this is not done immediately, all the vehicles will cruise on the new 8 lane from Nelamangala and halt here at this junction. As Metro train will run along the NH4 overhead, there cant’ be flyover here for ring road. Please take up magic box underpass. 3. Underpass or flyover at Subhas Chandra bose circle (Kantheerava studio circle).

We have Huge infrastructure and everything eg: 4 , 8 lane flyovers , ring road , volvo buses but Traffic signals not in good shape. also no one is thinking on Fuel saving while waiting on signals. my suggestion is we should have counters LCDs on every traffic signal so that person knows that its 10/90/120/180 sec remaining for signal to open. with that he can decide weather to swithoff vehicles or not. also in addition to this we can indicate something like indication users to swithoff your vehicles something kind of LCD blinkers . thats my personal experience many times i tried to swithoff my car and immediately signal goes green and its very pissing sometimes so thought this idea can be implemented that wouls be gr8.
