All, I have visited several citizen forums, websites and other civic related forums and websites and always found one basic element missing with regards to suggestions to increase use of public transport. Our bus sign boards must have bus numbers and destinations in an alternative language (English would be most appriciated) I would love to take a bus from my home (kamanahalli) but most busses do not have destinations in english? if I were to see an empty bus with clear details on where the bus terminates and the route it follows i would certainly be tempted to use it the next time. I'm not talking about the Vajras and HOHO and Big10...the regular Blue busses! i remember travelling in the lovely red and silver BTS busses while in school and we all conneted with the BUS number "302" everyone knew where it started and where it terminated....BMTC should take up a drive to do this. The BEST busses in Mumbai are a good example of clear and readable signages.

The buses can use color coding as well to distinguish their routes. Right now both Vajra and the BIAL buses look same (RED volvos). Although BIAL is displayed properly, it would be easier to spot a bus even from a distance if it's colored differently. Having the route maps of different buses at each bus stop (where there is a shelter or on a pole between transparent plastic plates) is a useful technique and is practised heavily in developed countries. They even have timings when the buses are expected and this gives an indication of frequency as well. Sticking to the timings might be a challenge in Bangalore, but the frequency is aways useful. The ideas of HOHO, BIG10 and Vajra are very effective, but what stops people from using them is the last mile connectivity. If the place of work or residence is not near a bus stop, they need to walk quite a distance and this discourages many people. The solution lies in increasing the frequency of HOHO, BIG10 & Vajra and using the blue buses as feeders. Once BMTC buses start plying all streets of Bangalore, people are bound to notice and after they use the service first time, the comfort is bound to bring them back.

One humble request:
It would also help if the route information / destination is displayed in both the languages on the same display panel (in parallel).
Atleast in those electronic display boards if it can be set to scroll in both languages parallel, it would help a LOT! In the existing system, it will take 30 seconds or more to scroll the first language completely.
Thanks,
Bimal
